新宮城は、本丸・鐘の丸などを高台に、二の丸を平地に配した「平山城」である。

城の種類 説明
山城 本丸・二の丸・三の丸などすべての郭を山の中に並べた城。
平山城 低い山や丘に本丸などの中心的郭群を並べ周囲の平地に外部の郭群を並べた城。
平城 全ての郭を平地に並べた城。
